Back to School

Today I go back to the cruel master of college. I like to learn, and I am grateful for the opportunity to get an education, but I really don't like college. It never ceases to amaze me of how professors usually are so oblivious to what it is like to be a student. You would think that they would be accutely atuned to it, especially seing as they have spent over a decade going to college to earn their Phd. They always seem eager to spit out random statistics saying that we should spend 2 hours out side of class studying for each hour spent in class. That is all well and fine to say. In fact, it sound very reasonable to me until I actually look at what that means. Take this semester where I am taking 15 credit hours or 5 classes. You would think that means that I spend 15 hours in the classroom every week, but you would be wrong. Actually that 15 hours translates into 27 hours of classroom time every week. Now my teachers expect for me to spend another two hours for each one in the classroom studying at home. That translates into another 54 hours of study time per week at home. So the people that I am paying to teach me are expecting me to study 81 hours per week. That sounds like a lot. Let's see. I forgot that somehow we have to pay for the books, and I may have to eat once or twice during the sememster. Let's say I work 15 hours per week. Now my work, school time is up to 96 hours per week. I may be crazy, but that looks like I'm now working two full time jobs plus overtime. That seems like a little much. If my professors put that much time into teaching me, then college would be very different. I am paying their salary, so why am I putting in all of the overtime?

My solution was to just not study. It helps if you aren't a perfectionist, but the difference between a b+/a- and an a/a+ is about 15 hours a week and I wasn't interested. Good luck!

I have to confess that after my first day of classes, I feel a little guilty about complaining about professors. This semester I have really good ones.
