Dreaming of the Future

Now that Melissa and I are done with college and have a positive income (YEAH!!!), we are dreaming of buying a house. It is so nice to see signs that say, "Start Homes from the low 110s!" Back in Provo the signs said, "Homes Everyone Can Afford: Staring in the 350s." It was either that or a home built in 1890, 900 sq ft, 5 bedroom (I still don't understand how you get 5 bedrooms in 900 sq ft) for $120,000. One thing we realized is that we would really like to have a one story home. It is no fun carrying kids up and down the steps all day long. Plus, we think a one story home is easier to clean. Lugging the vacuum up and down was not fun. I managed to have the vacuum fall on me while cleaning the steps. Those things were continually trying to kill me.
What do you think is a reasonable amount to pay for a starter home? What do you think is a good number of rooms for a starter home? While I'm asking questions, does anyone want to buy a home for us? We would love you forever!

One recommendation I've heard is 1500 - 1700 sq ft for a starter home. It's easier to manage and learn about all the upkeep (and money) required for a home. This is from an interior design book, but who can tell?! One-story is pretty nice, as you said. For my money, it's better to be at the low end of the best neighborhood you can afford. It's so fun to dream of that first home!!

Love,

CA Mom, how are you guys doing? Are you back in your home? We are praying that your home doesn't get eaten by the fires.
