Almost Done Detoxing

Hello, my name is Jared, and I am a TV addict. I have been clean for a week now.

Melissa and I have decided to go without TV for a year. We have so many big things happening in life (Lindsey, graduating from school, finding a real job, moving) that we decided we could do better things with our time. The TV has been silent for a week, and I think I am finally done detoxing. The first day was the hardest. We sat blinking at eachother wondering what to do. My mom was right. TV does rot the brain. Melissa asked, "Do you really want to start this today." I answered, "Well, we could start in January." Two addicts living together is probably not the best way to kick the habit, but we resisted temptation. It was hard. I am ashamed to admit it, but here is a list of some of the TV shows that I really enjoyed: Survivor, Prison Break, 24, House, Desperate Housewives, Law and Order (in all it's many colors and flavors), CSI (again in all it's varieties), The Unit, Bones, NCIS, Criminal Minds, The 4400, Numbers...you get the picture. I was addicted big time. I am continuously amazed at how much time we now have. This past week Melissa and I have read an entire novel, gone to the temple, played games every single day, gone on numberous walks, sung together, visited with friends, and much more. I rediscovered that there are fun things besides TV.

I don't know if I'm brave enough to do that--I'm hopelessly addicted! i hate it but i am! I'm willing to try this idea you guys are doing but can't convince Kyle to do it too. He's worse than I am. Kudos to y'all for making it this week!

Maybe Kyle would be willing to do a media fast for one week? I don't think it is wrong to watch TV, but going without for even a week is a real eye opener.

Maybe when he spends a whole month in Mexico later this year...

I guess if you like your spouse/life/kids there may be something appealing about turning off the tube. But for everyone else, maybe it's not such a bad thing...

jk! Good luck with your resolution! Very admirable :)
