QUICK! HELP!!

We are leaving for a road trip to Utah next Tuesday-the 8th! Tell us ALL the secrets of traveling with a 15month old! What are the secret travel Toys? Treats? Drugs? :) Just kidding-no drugs I think. What do you do when they are screaming b/c they wanna stop? Stop? Push through? We have a few shorter days (4-5 hours) and two long days (8-10 hours). Any help is needed! please! We wanna make it to family reunions sane (and hopefully leave sane too!!)

That is a cute distraught face!! I tried to call you back today, Melissa but you weren't home! Sadly, in our house our "hints" would be movies, toys, and yummy foods that might be rare treats. Save the treats for those moments when you have 30min till the next good break and they have lost it (and you're about to!) Also, sunshades or towels in the window to make sure they are never sitting in the hot sun or blinded from seeing an aforementioned movie! Call me!

Oh, also, our kids almost always eat their meals in the car. That way stops can be entirely for playing and running around. It seems silly to me to stop, only to make the kids sit still to eat. (or if they are hungry we allow them to run around between bites, or other such things that are big no-nos at home!)

Julie's advice is great. I was going to say some of the same things - blankets for sun shade, save treats for the last 30 min, eat in car & play at stops.

Also, we check out a bunch of music CDs from the library before we go on road trips. Our kids love Raffi, Baby Einstien, Lullaby CDs when they are tired, and folk music. They also sometimes like music Joel I get for ourselves.

Bring lots of books for her to look at in the car. And plenty of snacks she likes.

And the best thing? A magna doodle and/or an aqua doodle. Lindsay might be a little young for one though, but I think it's worth a try.

And when she cries:

If she's tired, turn on a lullaby CD and keep driving.

If she needs more entertainment, good luck! We usually just keep driving when our kids cry just because we would never get there if we stopped every time Lizzie cried. Good luck! Can't wait to see you!

Some might suggest that, if you are going to family reunions, you might already be outside the 'sane' category (especially if they know any Murdocks or Evanses). But that's OK, because that might help you to fit in better!
(I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing you, Jared, and that adorable Lindsey!!!)

Do you guys have a portable DVD player? If you do, check out a bunch of Baby Einstein DVDs from the library. That's what we did last year. It helped Lizzie a lot.

As for drugs, we are not against giving our kids children's Benadryl. When Savannah was 14 months old, we flew from PA to Seattle to visit R&R. Our pediatrician said we could give her a 1/2 teaspoon of children's Benadryl to help her sleep on the flight. It doesn't knock them out, just makes them more sleepy. We gave it to her about 30 min. before her usual nap time. I think it helped her take a better nap, which is important. Our kids almost always get run down on vacation and get sick because they are having so much fun, they don't want to eat or sleep.

Where in Utah are you heading? I think a pitstop in Lehi is your only answer. ;) I found you and your sisters through other blogs and it has been so fun to see what you 3 girls are up to! I miss your family so much!
